BIG Harvest from a Tiny Garden - High Performance Garden Show 2016 Recap

After 33 weeks of the High Performance Garden Show, I have been amazed at what is possible in such a tiny garden. We have covered so many gardening techniques, from planning a garden, to saving seed, there has been so much to do. For those of you who followed around for this live weekly garden show, have you been able to believe where we have come from? This garden was planned according to Dr. Terry Wahls recommendations for a healthy diet. This comprised of ⅓ leafy greens, ⅓ sulfur rich vegetables, and ⅓ color rich vegetables. There were some hiccups through the season, just like any other garden. Some of the tomatoes ended up being “mystery” varieties and didn’t produce as much as I would have liked. There were also leafminers, roly polys, and aphids that visited the garden. Each of these challenges were effectively handled in using organic High Performance garden techniques.

In the beginning of the season, I set up a goal to grow $2,990 in this 128 square foot garden. The reason for this challenge was to add excitement to the season, as well as to prove just what is possible with this garden system. This garden is the same as my Abundance Garden, the online course where you can learn all of the details of setting this type of garden up in your backyard costs $299. I wanted to see if in one year if it was possible for a student to return their investment tenfold.

By week 32, we were over $300 away from the goal amount. I wasn’t sure if we would make the goal with the various set backs the garden had experienced. Everyone was in for a surprise, after 33 weeks of intensive gardening, this garden produced $3,017.02! This has blown away the last record set for the garden of $2,560 worth of produce. This year there was 844 pounds of produce pulled from the garden. This garden averaged $23.57 per square foot.

Now, compare these results with the average garden. Bruce Butterfield, National Gardening Association Research Director found in his study The Impact of Home and Community Gardening In America, that a well taken care of garden would average ½ a pound of produce per square foot. That’s just $2.00 a square foot in market value! These high performance garden systems truly take garden production to a new level. Could you imagine if you grew a garden that did even half as well as the High Performance Garden did?

An organic garden that is a high producer is possible for your backyard, all that you need is the support to get you there. So, what do you say? Would you like to grow this garden?
