What is green, crunchy and ripening right now?

Hello Everyone!

We are so excited to see the first cucumber of the year!  We have been attentively caring for the plants anticipating an early production.  Normally cucumbers will not flower or even grow until the night temperatures are warm.  With the help of the heated soil in the Tomato House, the heavy frost blankets and a lot of determination we have the first cucumber of the season!  Five weeks earlier than we have every harvested any. With 2 frost blankets the cucumber plants survived through a 1 deg. F night. They were fine, and I still laid awake worrying about them!   Thankfully, they now reward me with the first cucumber and more to come!

High Performance Garden Show

The show is off to an amazing start and we are preparing the garden for a bountiful harvest to reach our goal of eating from the garden 365 days of the year. This week we focus on warm weather plants and sow cucumber, yellow squash, butternut squash seeds, and transplant the tomato plants grown to make sauce for the off season.

"I love watching your show! I am learning sooooo much! I tried fixing some Bok Choy for breakfast and love it. Been fixing it almost every day for the past two weeks."  Susan B.

Farm Life

Even after living on this farm for 30 years and watching the cycles of life emerge before my very eyes I still find so much wonder and truly there is never a dull moment. This week we are celebrating the arrival of the first 2 baby calves!

See you in the garden,

Lynn Gillespie

Garden Educator

"The first gift my garden gave me was challenge.  I started my gardening career in a traditional row garden and soon found out the challenges associated with the archaic form of gardening.  Back aches, blisters, heartaches, weeds, bugs and very little in return. But this first garden, my challenge garden, gave rise to me asking the question; Is there a better way? Can I garden in a way that is easier, more rewarding and takes less time? The snow soon came and covered up my challenge garden.  Then the spring came and I started a new garden with new ideas." - Lynn Gillespie
