Hi, I’m Lynn Gillespie, organic gardener and farmer for the past 3 decades.

I am so excited to share with you the solutions to those garden challenges you have been having.

But before we get to the answers, let’s take a look at your results.

Based on your age, region, and gardening habits, you have the Type E Garden Challenge.

This garden challenge doesn’t affect you right away. You might go out and plant your garden, excited for the future produce ahead of you.

But then, as your plants grow, your crops aren’t getting enough time mature before the end of the season.

Then some of your plants are getting away from you and bolting up overnight. The heat begins to scorch the plants! Those plants that are in the shade don’t seem to be doing well either, as it seems they are getting no sunlight at all. An unexpected frost that you weren’t prepared for strikes part of the garden and you have to start from square one.

You are keeping on top of the weeds, pests, and trying to care for the soil, but your very ENVIRONMENT seems to be conspiring against you.

This Environment garden challenge can be a good thing, in that all it really takes is a little forethought and research.

But then comes the confusion about how to grow in harmony with your unique environmental challenges, do you need a greenhouse? Is it just too hot to grow anything? How do you make the best of a short growing season?

Now, the fixes are simple, once you do a little research.

The difficulty is that by focusing on this one problem, you might sacrifice on getting the best production possible out of your garden, even with the solution I’m going to tell you about.

I want to tell you some things you can do yourself, starting today.

As we look at the solutions, I want to share with you the top 4  gardening challenges that  have been experienced by gardeners.

As we look at the solutions, I want to share with you the top 4  gardening challenges that  have been experienced by gardeners.

The four other challenges besides the Environmental Challenge include -

  • Type S Garden Challenge- is SOIL that is poor and grows stunted plants.
  • Type I Garden Challenge -is a garden that is INVADED by bugs and critters that eat your harvest.
  • Type P Garden Challenge -is a garden that does not PRODUCE enough for you and your family’s needs.

Each of these issues are intertwined and can even be experienced at the same time.

If you find yourself focusing on fixing one of these challenges you may find another cropping up. Addressing only one issue at a time might seem like the best option, but it can greatly affect the other 3 challenges.

Focusing on growing alongside your environment, and not spending time planning the garden, tending to the plants, and creating a healthy soil, will cause a bug eaten, poor soil, and small harvest even with the perfect environmental plan.

This can be an endless cycle if you do not find a new solution.

Before we talk about how to bring a solution to all of the challenges you will experience in the garden, let’s get the specific prescription for the Environmental garden challenge.

I will give you the techniques you need to fix the Environmental Challenge Garden and I will tell you the ultimate solution to end the greatest garden challenges at the end of the video.

3 Techniques for Growing in an Environmentally Challenged Garden

Okay, are you ready for this? Here are the 3 techniques for growing in an environmentally challenged garden.

Find Your Growing Zone
To effectively plant your garden you will need to know when to plant what, how long your growing season is and what varieties you can grow. Before you can answer any of these questions you will need to know your plant hardiness zone.

All of your gardening will be determined by daylength and temperatures. It is important to have an understanding of your average temperatures and weather patterns for your local area. Back in 1960’s, the US Department of Agriculture published a map of the United States that showed the different winter temperature zones. The United States has winter temperatures that range from the tropics to the arctic, dividing the country into 13 zones. The warmest being zone 13 that has no frost days. The coldest is zone 1 that can go to negative 60 degrees Fahrenheit. In 2012 the US Department of Agriculture updated their maps, showing the now warmer average winter temperatures across the US in the last 20 years. Other countries have followed suit and there are now maps for other countries around the world.

With your zone comes average last and first frost dates in your growing season. You can find your average first and last frost dates by knowing your growing zone.

Look at the map that will be emailed to your inbox to help you find exactly what your growing zone is.

Another key is to go and monitor how much sunlight your garden patch gets, it at least needs to get 6 hours, the plants and varieties you can grow will be constrained by this greatly.

Customize Plant Varieties According to Season Length
Now that you know the average length of your growing season, and the amount of light your garden will get, it’s time to start ordering plant varieties. If you have a shorter growing season, make sure to get the seeds that take less time to mature, and vice versa. Here are a few tips for choosing varieties for your gardens

A hybrid  seed will usually outperform a heirloom seed if you are new to gardening chose a hybrid.

Ask at your garden center what they recommend. Or talk to a seasoned gardener what they recommend.

Create Infrastructure for Covering the Garden Plants
Now that you have plants and a plan for how to fit into your growing season, you will need to be able to protect your plants from surprise frosts, windy conditions, hail, rain, and all other weather anomalies.

For this, I recommend building my easy-no-tools-required trellis. These trellises are easy to change the height so that you can cover any plants, whether big or small.

Once you have this built, then you will customize your covers according to your needs. If you need to shade your plants, a shade cloth that you can find online or at your local gardening center can be draped over your frame. If you want to protect the produce from the cold, a blanket over the frame will do, however, if you are looking at rain or snow, you will need to cover the blanket with a plastic cover. If your warm thermal layer gets wet it won’t trap the heat over the plants.

With these three techniques you should begin to protect your garden from the environmental challenges you face everyday.

This can be a lot to add into your gardening routine, but it won’t fix the biggest issue that your plants experience.

Because you have the Environmental Garden Challenge, you will need to be careful as you apply these fixes as doing this will change the balance in your garden.

Once you address the environmental challenges, you will experience a momentary relief in the garden. But I have found in my own experience to be short lived.

In the beginning you will be elated to find that your plants are growing well despite your environmental difficulties. The plants are growing better than ever before, in fact, you have extended the growing season by four weeks with your careful planning! But as the season goes on, you will notice big gaps in planting, that could have been filled with crops. The plants are not getting enough nutrition and are becoming stunted and unproductive. The pests are ravaging your tomatoes and you might be too late to save them!

As you try to balance this, your plants are not producing much, and your family was depending on this supplement to your diet!

The garden is starting to be more trouble than it is truly worth.

Fixing just one thing, sets off a host of other problems.

So, for the BEST results you address all of the challenges at once.

For this you will need to follow these 5 easy do it yourself steps to get started.

5 Steps to Building a New Garden System

1. Use Raised Beds with New Soil

These raised beds will cut your garden time in half, reduce your weeds and reduce that amount of feed that you will need to put on the garden. This also allows for you to build the perfect soil once. This saves so much money as you won’t be trying to supplement the soil as you go, which can become expensive and time consuming.

2. Feed Plants on a Schedule

Even with the perfect soil, you will find that the plants will grow hungry as they feed off of the nutrients in the soil. By setting up a schedule, you can make sure to feed the plants exactly what they need, when they need it. No more pouring endless amounts of fertilizers out to your plants. For my heavy feeder plants, I give them a cup of my compost and a tablespoon of an organic fertilizer that contains trace minerals. This is done on a 4 week schedule through the growing season. This technique grows produce with the best taste possible!

3. Carefully Plan the Season

This technique can be tricky for many gardeners. Really what it requires is a quiet afternoon with your garden seeds in hand and a notepad and a pencil. By scheduling crops to follow each other through the garden to maximize all of the weeks you can grow, will be a great way to know exactly how to get the most out of your garden.

4. Use Organic Pest Control and Protection

This is important in making sure that your soil is kept healthy. Many of the non organic pesticides can damage your plants and ultimately your produce. Stay with organic methods and make sure to watch the garden for clues of invaders.

5. Grow with, not Against, your Climate

When planning out your garden, make sure to find out how many weeks you have, when the average frost dates are and research the average temperatures. This is invaluable information. This way you can choose plant varieties that thrive with those limitations your climate has. Knowing this information also gives you a clue for the infrastructure such as covers to protect your garden.

These five steps are the beginning of installing a new modern garden system into your backyard. I want to help you combine all of these fixes into an organic ecosystem that works in harmony

I have been in your shoes when it comes to a frustrating garden.

Three decades ago, I moved  in with my new husband to his family’s three generation farm. Excited to support my family, I decided to plant a garden. The garden was rototilled and planted, in long rows. And then, the weeds came up.

Then, I found that the bugs and wildlife were feasting on the plants. As I poured organic pesticides on the plants, I noticed they were withered, they were starving from the poor soil. I slowly lost ground in the garden until it was a big weedy mess.

Over 30 years I worked to balance my new garden system.

I know that you have struggled with your garden just as I did and I want to help you to resolve your issues so you can have a successful garden like I do now.
