THE SOLUTION TO THE TYPE P GARDEN CHALLENGE
THE SOLUTION TO THE TYPE P GARDEN CHALLENGE
Hi, I’m Lynn Gillespie, organic gardener and farmer for the past 3 decades.
I am so excited to share with you the solutions to those garden challenges you have been having.
Based on your age, region, and gardening habits, you have the Type P Garden Challenge.
This garden challenge doesn’t affect you right away. You might go out and plant your garden, excited for the future produce ahead of you.
But then, as your plants grow, you notice that there isn’t much food coming off of your plants. The tomatoes you planted don’t have very many tomatoes on them. An unexpected frost puts an end to your tomato crop. You are keeping on top of the weeds, pests, and trying to care for the soil, but your very plant’s PRODUCTION is lacking.
This Low Production garden challenge can be a good thing, in that all it really takes is a little planning and nutrients.
But then comes the confusion about when to feed and how much to plant for your needs? Is there a way to know exactly how much to plant in the gardens?
Now, the fixes are simple, once you do a little planning. .
The difficulty is that by focusing on this one problem, you might sacrifice on getting the best production possible out of your garden, even with the solution I’m going to tell you about.
I want to tell you some things you can do yourself, starting today.
As we look at the solutions, I want to share with you the top 4 gardening challenges that have been experienced by gardeners.
The Top 4 Gardening Challenges
As we look at the solutions, I want to share with you the top 4 gardening challenges that have been experienced by gardeners.
There are three other challenges besides the Low Producing Garden Challenge,
Those are -
Type S Garden Challenge- is SOIL that is poor and grows stunted plants.
Type E Garden Challenge - is a garden grown in a difficult ENVIRONMENT such as short growing seasons, or harsh conditions.
Type I Garden Challenge -is a garden that is INVADED by bugs and critters that eat your harvest.
Each of these issues are intertwined and can even be experienced at the same time.
Addressing only one issue at a time might seem like the best option, but it can greatly affect the other 3 challenges.
Focusing on growing a productive garden, and not spending time planning how to grow the garden according to your seasonal requirements, protecting from the pests, and creating a healthy soil, will cause a bug eaten, poor soil, and smaller harvest even with the perfect feeding and succession plan.
This can be an endless cycle if you do not find a new solution.
Before we talk about how to bring a solution to all of the challenges you will experience in the garden, let’s get the specific prescription for the Low Production garden challenge.
3 Techniques for Overcoming Low Production
Okay, are you ready for this? Here are the 3 techniques for overcoming the Low Producing Garden Challenge.
Succession Planning
Succession planting is planting a crop multiple times so you have an endless supply of that produce. lettuce is a great example. If you plant a crop of lettuce only once you will have a few harvests over a few weeks and then the crop will be done. If you plant the lettuce every few weeks you will have a continual harvest over the whole season.
Or succession planting is to plant a crop in the space that another crop just finished so You have the garden beds full all the time. In our High Performance gardens we teach both methods of succession planting.
Garden Feeding Schedule
A well fed plant will naturally produce more. It will also be more resistant to pests, diseases, and freezing. A higher concentration of sugars and minerals in the plant will also make your produce taste amazing.
You will want to plant in a nutrient rich soil and feed the garden throughout the season. I recommend adding a cup of compost and a tablespoon of fertilizer to your heavy feeder plants once every four weeks. You will want to tweak this ratio as everyone’s compost is different and your plants will have different needs. Add this into the soil around the plants and water it in.
Choose High Producing Varieties
A hybrid seed will usually outperform a heirloom seed if you are new to gardening chose a hybrid. These hybrid seeds ensure a high and consistent yield and are increasingly disease resistant. These seeds are not genetically modified they are cross pollinated. Not only are these seeds in harmony with nature they also help you to achieve higher yields and have less incidences with disease. I frequently use hybrids on my farm to ensure high production rates.
Ask at your garden center what they recommend. Or talk to a seasoned gardener what they recommend.
With these three techniques you should begin to take your production levels to the next stage.
This can be a lot to add into your gardening routine, but it won’t fix the biggest issue that your plants experience. Now that your vegetable garden has these high producing and well fed plants, what is it planted in and where is its protection? The soil you plant in will generally not have all of the nutrition the plants need so you will find yourself supplementing more to compensate for the discrepancy. As the expenses rise, you will notice that there are bugs in your high producing plants. Then the wildlife come and start munching at the produce. Before your tomatoes can ripen, the frost gets to them and your large crop is decimated. Because you had no planning and didn’t take the time to protect from bugs and critters, a lot of your harvest is decimated.
To solve this you will need to be constantly putting out fires, by pouring insecticides on infested plants, and throwing blankets or covers onto your plants at 10 at night for an incoming frost.
Just using these production solutions is just a band-aid fix, not a long term solution, unless you have unlimited amounts of time to pour into problem solving the garden.
Because you have the Low Producing Garden Challenge, you will need to be careful as you apply these solutions that I have told you about. Once you address the low producing garden challenges, you will experience a momentary relief in the garden.
In the beginning you will be elated to find that your plants are growing well. The plants are growing better than ever before, in fact, you see more produce on the plants than ever before! But as the season goes on, you will notice big gaps in planting, that could have been filled with crops. The plants are not getting the proper protection against pests and wildlife and they are enjoying your bumper crop!
As you try to balance this, your plants are not producing much, and your family was depending on this supplement to your diet!
The garden is starting to be more trouble than it is truly worth.
Fixing just one thing, sets off a host of other problems.
So, for the BEST results you address all of the challenges at once.
For this you will need to follow these 5 easy do it yourself steps to get started.
1. Use Raised Beds with New Soil
These raised beds will cut your garden time in half, reduce your weeds and reduce that amount of feed that you will need to put on the garden. This also allows for you to build the perfect soil once. This saves so much money as you won’t be trying to supplement the soil as you go, which can become expensive and time consuming.
2. Feed plants on a schedule
Even with the perfect soil, you will find that the plants will grow hungry as they feed off of the nutrients in the soil. By setting up a schedule, you can make sure to feed the plants exactly what they need, when they need it. No more pouring endless amounts of fertilizers out to your plants. For my heavy feeder plants, I give them a cup of my compost and a tablespoon of an organic fertilizer that contains trace minerals. This is done on a 4 week schedule through the growing season. This technique grows produce with the best taste possible!
3. Carefully Plan the Season
This technique can be tricky for many gardeners. Really what it requires is a quiet afternoon with your garden seeds in hand and a notepad and a pencil. By scheduling crops to follow each other through the garden to maximize all of the weeks you can grow, will be a great way to know exactly how to get the most out of your garden.
4. Use Organic Pest Control and Protection
This is important in making sure that your soil is kept healthy. Many of the non organic pesticides can damage your plants and ultimately your produce. Stay with organic methods and make sure to watch the garden for clues of invaders.
5. Grow with, not Against, your Climate.
When planning out your garden, make sure to find out how many weeks you have, when the average frost dates are and research the average temperatures. This is invaluable information. This way you can choose plant varieties that thrive with those limitations your climate has. Knowing this information also gives you a clue for the infrastructure such as covers to protect your garden.
These five steps are the beginning of installing a new modern garden system into your backyard. I want to help you combine all of these fixes into an organic ecosystem that works in harmony
.
I have been in your shoes when it comes to a frustrating garden.
Three decades ago, I moved in with my new husband to his family’s three generation farm. Excited to support my family, I decided to plant a garden. The garden was rototilled and planted, in long rows. And then, the weeds came up.
Then, I found that the bugs and wildlife were feasting on the plants. As I poured organic pesticides on the plants, I noticed they were withered, they were starving from the poor soil. I slowly lost ground in the garden until it was a big weedy mess.
Over 30 years I worked to balance my new garden system.
I know that you have struggled with your garden just as I did and I want to help you to resolve your issues so you can have a successful garden like I do now.
